Walker book publishing.

The comics interns were invited to practise their graphic novel pitches to the lovely book publisher, Walker. There, they were introduced to Lizzie Spratt and David McDougall who presented us the history of Walker, through the books they have published. It was enlightening to see the range of books they have published over the years, how much they've grown and which international titles they picked up. They shared their insight to what they hope for Walker in the future. It was great to see how passionate they were about comics and they understood how comics in Britain was still developing.

Meet Craig Thompson!

On Saturday, GOSH! London comics arranged a special comic event! Shamisa and Abe met their beloved international hero, Craig Thompson, the maker of Habibi.

Though the line was lengthy, Thompson made sure to dedicate his time equally amongst every individual. Once, Shamisa and Abe reached the front, gushing to the extreme, they pestered him and asked every question under the rainbow~

During the instigation, they were shocked to find out that he used to draw 16 hours a day!!! However due to his busy schedule, he now only draws 8 hours a day!

We were wondering... if Thompson ever sleeps...!

Brussels: PART 3

Welcome to the penultimate report on our Brussels trip! In Part 3 we'll be telling you all about our last day in Belgium before we travelled home late Monday evening.

Once again it was an early start because we had a lot of walking to do on Monday. We went on a comic walk, you see! For half the day we went on a journey around the capital looking for something amazing: COMICS MURALS. It was amazing. AMAZING. I'm sorry I'll stop saying the word amazing. BUT IT WAS.

We had yet another helpful guide, Roxanne, to show us where all the murals were hidden throughout the city.

It was so inspiring seeing a country so dedicated to their comics as part of their culture. Just LOOK at how huge and how many murals there are. Wonderful to see. Our photos really don't do them justice, they were awesome.

Phew, we needed a sit down afterwards though. We quickly ate lunch, and hurried off to the nearest comic shop, which happened to be "Brusels" (spelt with an umlaut). All of us took the opportunity to pick up some beautiful comic collections in this amazingly diverse shop, which even had comics in our native tongue, hurray for being able to read them AND look at the gorgeous artwork.
We spent a little TOO long in there however, and had to rush off - we were due to be at the Sint Lukas art academy that afternoon! RUN RUN RUN! Past the strip joints, up the ridiculously steep hill, across the busy roads - ah, here we are. Sint Lukas, where our very own Karrie Fransman was giving a lecture~

Then she sprung a surprise on us: We had to present our work too! EEP. However the students were really friendly and we all got up to show our comics and individual styles. They seemed really interested, which was great, and we got to chat to a lot of them in the break. Once again they were surprised that the attitude towards comics in Britain is so different to that of their own. Iiinteresting.

Following telling them all a bit about ourselves, we got them to take part in our never ending comic activity which we'd brought with us, and you'll be able to see the collected drawings in our exhibition in March.

And that was that. TIME TO RUN FOR A TRAIN AGAIN PFFFT.

Yep, we hopped on a train back to the centre of the city, then made our way home on the Eurostar.

"Goodbye Brussels, it was fun attempting to speak French with you."

We learnt a whole lot on this trip, and are so grateful we had the opportunity to go. Thanks go to John Lyon's Charity and the londonprintstudio, Nadia for travelling with us, and Shamisa for organising the whole trip.

Look forward to the last part of our report, in which we shall bring you some of our own comics (as we know of no better way to express our feelings post-trip). We hope you've enjoyed these reports!

Brussels: PART 2

It's time for the next exciting episode of Comic Interns in Brussels!

Today's post will detail our exciting adventures on Day 2 of our trip to Belgium (which was a delightfully FREEZING Sunday).

After our first night at the hostel we woke early to make our way to the Comic Museum. On the way were plenty of beautiful structures, walkways and chocolate and book shops, which we gawked at longingly. Oddly for a weekday though they were all closed in the morning - Shamisa informed us that the Belgians are certainly not early risers!

And then we arrived at the stunning Comic Museum! It was a gorgeous art deco style building, with lots of scale/lifesize models of characters and vehicles from famous comics. If you squint you can just make out Asterix in the lobby, and a certain space rocket. And Tintin here was joined by Haddock and Calculus on either side. They were fantastic displays of the country's love for these comics.

We were led around the museum by the wonderfully enthusiastic Bart Hofman. He was a great guide to us, and explained a lot about Belgian comics history. The museum itself was very extensive, with detailed exhibits on Tintin, Lucky Luke, Marsipilami, and many other serialised comics. Most informative - we didn't want to leave!

Alas, our time in Brussels was only short and so we made our way toward (yep, you guessed it) the train station - but fear not, we went somewhere even MORE exciting than the comic museum.

IMPOSSIBLE I hear you cry. Tis not.

You see, we spent the rest of the day in ...

THE HERGE MUSEUM.

It was brilliant. The architecture of the building was so quirky, and there was so much to see. Truly an inspiring part of our trip, the museum featured extensive displays of Herge's work on the Tintin comics, as well as his other illustration work. We were privileged to see behind the scenes test prints, sketches, scribblings, designs and even lifesize models of memorable objects from the comics, such as the shark submarine featured in the Red Rackham's Treasure story. It was amazing to see all that Herge had accomplished in his life in this one building.

Unfoooortunately, we could only take pictures in the lobby... so we quickly snapped these and then bought lots and lots of lovely Tintin merch in the gift shop. Can't recommend visiting this museum enough.

Once again, we didn't really want to leave, but we had dinner reservations so back on the train we hopped. Back in Brussels, we had a lovely meal in a Moroccan restaurant with Shamisa's friendly mother and brother, who were so nice and told us a lot about what the average person thinks of comics in Belgium. They were genuinely surprised that the British perspective on comics was so different to their own. It was a lovely evening, and was a great end to a great day.

Meet Al Davison.

Meeting the admirable, Al Davison in londonprintstudio was an eye opening experience! Not only a knowledgable and a passionate comics artist, he also is crammed packed with touching personal stories. His client list includes, DC/Vertigo comics, Dark Horse Entertainment and Penguin Books.

To read more about his life experiences and see his drawings of the unconscious, please support his project, "The Alchemist's Easel".

To summarise here are a few tips he taught us:

6 Elements to a plot: (This comic follows the plot format)

1] Introduce the character

2] Introduce the location

3] Reveal the character in the location

4] Conflict or Question

5] Explore the conflict/question

6] Resolve!

► People read BLACK faster than white.

► Larger images/open frames are slower to read, they can act as a full stop.

► Remember GUTTERS! The larger the gutter, the more time has passed. The thinner the gutter, the less time has passed.

► Due to the book format of reading right to left, splash pages should be on the left for impact.

(As it increases the suspense as the reader turns the page).

► Use speech bubbles to guide the reader through the flow of the page. If there are two characters speaking in a frame, the character positioned on the left should speak first.

Brussels: PART 1

Okay, here's how we see it: we're going to break down our visit to Brussels into four parts, so that we can tell you all how much fun we had and how much we learnt in digestible chunks; Part 1 will cover Saturday, Part 2 will cover Sunday, Part 3 will cover Monday (these will all be photo posts) and Part 4 will present some entertaining blog comics from each of us. Y'got all that? Good! Let's get started with
Part 1: SATURDAY.

So after a very early start for most of us, we arrived in Brussels via the Eurostar. It was a fun journey, a lot of us had never been through the tunnel before. It was so cold when we got there! SHIVER SHIVER.

We quickly nipped to the hostel to drop off our bags and then our first day in Brussels actually began.

Simply walking through the capital we were amazed at the Grand Place and all of the wonderful architecture. It is a beautiful city, don't let Abe's strip fool you, it's not all dodgy red light districts!

The city was so well decorated for the festive period, especially at night (which you will see in Part 2).
Around midday we sampled Belgian waffles! THEY WERE SO TASTYYY. But the trip was not, of course, just about the delicious food (we'll come to the chocolates eventually) - in the background of us chewing away, you can see...

Yup, it's Tintin!
This was one of many comics walls (yes, you read that correctly!) around the city, and we'll show you them all in Part 3.

So we now come to the main event of Saturday: Heading for Strip Turnhout. Antwerp Station stunned us with its multiple levels of trains and lovely architecture. This was also the first of many trains over the course of the weekend that we ran for; we seemed to do a lot of running!

We got to Strip Turnhout for the afternoon, and got to hear some really interesting talks about the international creation of comics and how the comics scenes differ around the world, featuring speakers such as Paul Gravett and Rashid Alik. While we promoted our collective at one of the sales tables, we also got to see the comics exhibition about the Keikeboes comic strips; and a British exhibition featuring our very own Karrie Fransman, last years intern Rachel Emily Taylor, Daniel Merlin Goodbrey and others. All of their comics were really interesting in terms of breaking and reconstructing the rules of comics.
After the event was a live music and interview event on stage, which featured Posy Simmonds. It was lovely to hear a little bit about how she feels about her work.

The event was over quickly as we had arrived quite late in the day, but we all really enjoyed it. We got to meet so many other great people from the comics community including Kevin O'Neill, Woodrow Pheonix, Peter Stanbury, and many many more, during the after event dinner.

Alas, that was Saturday over! After drinking some crazy strong hot chocolates and waving goodbye to Turnhout, We ran for yet another train, almost missed it, and then made our way back to Brussels to get some needed rest for our next jam-packed day in the city. In Part 2 we'll cover what happened on Sunday, including the Belgian Comics Museum and the Herge Museum! LE GASP!

Strip Turnhout

Just a quick post to let everyone know that the interns are nipping out of the country this weekend to attend Strip Turnhout! Karrie Fransman is a guest of the event, and the interns will be at a table with an activity you can take part in if you come along: The never ending comic!
Want to know more? You better come to Strip Turnhout then! (Or if you can't make it, don't worry, we'll be doing a writeup after the weekend.)
We'll be in Brussels for the weekend to visit various places (TINTIN MUSEUM GAH I'M RATHER EXCITED) thanks to the project funders, so we hope to get a lot of great inspiration there and come back to make some awesome comics for the anthology!

COMICA COMIKET!

The londonprintstudio comics collective shared a table together at COMIKET, organised by Paul Gravett. We featured all of our wonderful and diverse work, ranging from comics books, zines, prints, badges and so much more. Unfortunately, Merlin was feeling unwell and couldn't make it, but we really hope to attend another convention/event with her next time, the whole entourage!

We also got to meet the previous interns, William Goldsmith who was supporting the Jonathan Cape table, Joe Kelly with his eye catching screen prints and the "Graphic short story" winner, Isabel Greenberg!

The event was more intimate/comics focused than other cons that I have attended. I definitely recommend any comic lovers to attend the next COMIKET! It's a wonderful atmosphere to network or just to meet your favourite comics artists, with signings occurring all over the venue.

The highlight was most definitely seeing all the amazing comics artists draw LIVE in the parade~ such as Luke Pearson, Warren Pleece, Posy Simmonds and our loveable Karrie Fransman.

Our table were still in awe over Frederik Peeters. He was so hardcore, drawing an intricate perspective piece with ink brush pens, with absolutely no penciling...! Brecht Evens amazed us all by drawing the venue in colourful inks...!

Another vulnerable comics strip by our Abe~! Lily and Jade journeyed to Thought Bubble over the weekend, another great comic convention, held in Leeds...! To read about Jade's adventures, hop over to her blog.

Meeting Self Made Hero + Frederik Peeters

The comics interns at londonprintstudio, had the privilege of stepping into the Self Made Hero head quarters, a place where dreams come true...! We were warmly welcomed with tea and cakes, surrounded by shelving of comics...! To top things off, we also got to meet the legendary comics artist, Frederik Peeters in person.

For a man who creates such extraordinary work and won so many awards, he is still extremely modest and you can genuinely tell he loves creating comics…! He even kindly allowed us to touch his original drawings, of which we literally hovered them in our hands, as we were afraid of damaging them.

A great motivational figure… and someone to work towards…! I think all the interns felt the same way, as soon as the meeting ended, I had the urge to scramble home and grab a pencil to start drawing…

Frederik's newest English translated book is: Sand castle.
He also did a great Zombie drawing exercise... take a look here!

There is currently an inspirational exhibition featuring the 5 finalists and Isabel's winning comic piece, in Foyles Bookshop, Charring Cross. The exhibition is running till the 4th December, so there is plenty of time to visit...!

London MCM Expo Reportback

Hi guys, Jade here. The expo on the 29th and 30th was so much fun! Susan and I both really enjoyed the weekend, and we also had quite a lot of interest at both our tables! I must say, Susan's illustrations made for a beautiful stall. Unfortunately she didn't get any pictures but I took home some of her lovely prints, which you can check out on her website: www.susanyanmach.com

My stall was so broooown in comparison to Susans, but still managed to gather some interest hahaha - perhaps because I was sharing with the wonderful Amanda Elanor Tribble, or perhaps it was due to the confusion regarding my cosplay. (A lot of people weren't sure if I was Velma or not - all I shall say is: JINKIES!) I had a lot of great supportive people come and buy comics from me on the Saturday, and to my surprise a lot came back on the Sunday to congratulate me on a job well done. My thanks to everyone who stopped by either my or Susan's stalls - we really enjoyed talking to each and every one of you! And many more thanks for buying any of our prints and comics!

Ellen Lindner and the Anthology!

Dear fellow comic lovers,

Recently we had a lovely workshop by Ellen Lindner, an American/British comic artist and

illustrator. She taught us all about anthologies as she had become an expert in it over the years. Showing her collection we were all amazed. How many anthologies must have filled the world already? She brought only a small sample, but still there was no more space on the table. I was shocked. I've never been in one, how was this possible?

Before I discarded anthologies as I thought that nobody ever read them. But then she pulled up a 'little' anthology called 'Raw'. 'Raw' should be an historical artifact (if it isn't already). The most established authors of our time are displayed, one by one, some even before they ever made it big.

Anthologies can start careers and create bonds between artists all over the world. You won't see me discarding anthologies any time soon: keep 'm coming! First up is our own anthology, 'Parallel lives'!

Lynn Weddle's Art Education Workshop

On Tuesday 18th October http://www.lynnweddle.com/ Lynn Weddle came to londonprintstudio to run a workshop on 'Running an Art Workshop'! Lynn is a photographic artist based in Brighton, with a huge amount of arts education experience - we had a fantastic day and learnt so much from her.

The morning started with some ice breakers - drawing our expectations for the day in less than five minutes (not easy), and all of us then knuckled down and thought about what makes art workshops/outreach projects different to learning in a school-based environment. The key elements that we all felt should run through a good workshop were an informal tone, practical, hands-on, supportive, flexible, engaging and just a bit of good old fun.

Lynn shared with us several of her experiences of running art workshops with a diverse range of young adults, including one project that saw her participants exhibiting their work on the Fourth Plinth at Trafalgar Square! Lynn encouraged us to spend the afternoon planning and then running our own workshops which we presented to each other and received feedback on, pooling together everything we had learnt so far in the day. It was an intense afternoon, but fantastic to gain such insight from an industry professional on how to develop and implement engaging and memorable workshops for audiences of all ages.

London MCM Expo

Hi everyone!

If you're free this weekend and in serious need to feed your comics hunger, then drop by at the London MCM Expo. They will be showcasing SCI-FI goodness, the latest films previews, game demos and a cosplay masquerade! But of course, the Comic Village is where all the excitement is happening~!

Both the lovely Jade and Susan will have stalls there, to sell their creative works. Jade will be selling her freshly printed, short comic called, "Click Click, BANG BANG!" (image above) as well as many other goodies. Susan will be selling her four page entry for the Observer competition, "Eviction" (image below). Both comics artists will be drawing portraits/commissions all day~!

Above is the layout plan of the Comics Village, so you all know where to find us! (Please click image to enlarge) We'll also be there to answer any questions regarding the workshops or the anthology that the londonprintstudio are organising.

On another positive note, our very own Merlin travelled far to the glamorous Cheltenham Awards yesterday, to collect her Runner Up Prize. Needless to say, everyone at londonprintstudio proudly held back tears of joy...!

First blog post by the newest interns: Here we go!
Last week we had a chance to get out of the studio and explore London a little, which was great for inspiration (and for Shamisa, our Flemish intern, who has never been to London before!).

We started off with a visit to the people at House of Illustration, who are very supportive of our project. They’re currently running their second illustration competition in conjunction with the Folio Society, which you can find details of here.

We then visited the Sir John Soane Museum – a wonderfully eccentric collection of artefacts hidden away in the beautiful home of Sir John Soane. We were all in awe of the brilliant design of the house too, what with the original owner being an architect. It was fantastic inspiration for us to see such eccentricities in what should be simply an elaborate home – gave us all great ideas for settings and backgrounds in our comics!

After that we nipped across to the Hunterian Museum. This is a fantastic place for studying anatomy in many ways – from the outside and in! There are so many great specimens to look at and most of us took the opportunity to get some sketches in. A recommended visit for any artist.

Following a bit of a grossing-out at the Hunterian, we had lunch together – and it was a chance for Jade to snap a couple of pictures of the new interns. Unfortunately, Susan was at home with flu that day, and Jade was bordering on it so she stayed behind the camera – but you’ll get to see them in snaps of workshops at a later date no doubt.

After lunch we headed for the British Museum – we visited the print rooms which had some beautiful, unbelievably detailed ink drawings, and the new Manga exhibition on the adventures of Professor Munakata. Seeing the original sketched, inked and screentoned pages of this manga by Hoshino Yukinobu was amazing for us as comic artists; it’s always a good experience to see how other comic artists go through their process of making a page.

Finally, we went on a hunt for comic book shops! We visited Forbidden Planet, which has an
amazingly well stocked basement, and Orbital Comics, which had an exhibition featuring some brilliant British comic artists’ self portraits. Our day of exploring ended there but there are plenty of other great places in London (and out of it) that you can visit if you want inspiration for your comics. So explore! Get out there! Informing yourself informs your comics and makes them much more interesting to read, so do it~!

Shamisa Debroey looks to push the boundaries between illustration and strip, minimal and colourful, and topics like love and hate. She recently graduated from the infamous Sint Lukas Brussels under the careful supervision of Johan Stuyck, head of publishing house Oogachtend. She received an MA in Comics and Illustration and finished top of her class. Growing up surrounded by comics made by Herge, Franquin and many other Belgian greats, she fell in love with drawing and storytelling. But ever since she was young, she never could colour in the lines. Mentored by Randall C., who also mentored up and coming comic artist Brecht Evens, she worked on her first graphic novel ‘The Wanderer’, merging the autobiographical with her lively imagination. ‘The Wanderer’ is to be published in 2012 in Belgium and the Netherlands.

Susan Yan Mach strongly believes that comics can truly communicate universally. Combining her Chinese and British cultural backgrounds, she creates and writes comics exploring mythology and folklore. Having studied Illustration within Graphic Design and Media in London College of Communication, she uses her bold, modern graphic style accompanied with semiotics to retell supernatural and surreal tales. She has had her work exhibited in the Marine Studios and Japan Matsuri festival. Using her cutting edge, contemporary style, she is currently drawing a series focusing on traditional Chinese superstitions and old wives tales.

Merlin Evans is a London based illustrator and writer, partial to taking hefty literary classics and plunging them head first into the world of lively, hand-drawn comic creations. Shaun Tan awarded her Emerging Talent runner-up for Cheltenham Illustration Awards 2011. This year she is published in 'Images 35: Best of British Contemporary Illustration' annual and exhibited at London's Cork Street Gallery. Previous clients include John Lewis, Mindapples and the House of Illustration. She is currently working on a graphic novel; an illustrated collection of love letters between great men and women throughout history.

Lily-Rose Beardshaw is an illustrator and comics maker who enjoys creating tactile artwork through handmade processes including inks, stitch and collage. She studied Illustration at the University of Gloucestershire and Comics at the Saint-Luc Institute in Brussels, and can speak and write comics in French. Her short comic 'Planet Rabbit' will be appearing in the Inspired Comics Sci-Fi Anthology this autumn. Jade Sarson fuses her tea-loving British roots with emotion-driven Japanese influences from her childhood, and combines traditional techniques with digital. She recently graduated from the University of Lincoln with a First class Honours degree in Illustration. Her work has been featured in many anthologies including the Leek and Sushi series (ITCH publishing), Non Repro and Nami, and in 2011 won 5th place in the Japanese Embassy's Manga Jiman competition, awarded by Ed Ilya. She is currently working on her popular web comic Cafe Suada, a comic about (you guessed it!) tea.

Abraham Christie is a London based comic creator whose practice centers around a naive dissection of his life and neuroses. Utilising a childlike, playful scribble and bold colours, his art explores daily life and inner turmoil, often in the guise of superheroes. Abraham attended Central Saint Martins School of Art, where he emerged in 2010 with a degree in Fine Art. Since then he has concentrated on writing/drawing comics, primarily his daily strip Doodle Daydream and his zine, titled: Nervous in a Cape; copies of which were included in the reading room of Tate Britain's Rude Britannia exhibition. Abraham has sold and distributed his zines in many fairs and exhibitions, including the London Comic & Small Press Expo 2011 held at Goldsmiths College.

Exciting news. We've just uploaded the new call-out for the second 6 month comic internship starting in September at londonprintstudio. We are offering five 21-25 year olds the chance to:

-Receive mentoring from top professional comic artists, anthology makers, screenwriters, comic publishers, print makers and art educators.

-Run comic workshops for 16-20 year olds.

You are invited to the private view of the 'IMAGINED CITIES' exhibition at londonprintstudio on Thursday June 16th 6.30-8.30 pm.

From mad bird gods to man-eating women, from a run down Northern suburb to an Eastern block city; the work you will see in the IMAGINED CITIES exhibition showcases the varied imaginations of some of the best young, British comic artists. This exhibition is the culmination of a 6 month internship run by the londonprintstudio where five interns (Joe Kelly, Rachel Taylor, William Goldsmith, Isabel Greenberg and Freya Harrison) created new original narrative art as well as mentoring local teenagers and creating an anthology. Their work, and that of the 16-20 year old students, is displayed alongside professional British comic artists who have acted as project mentors; Al Davison (Vertigo), Ellen Lindner (Whores of Mensa), Karrie Fransman (Random House) and publisher SelfMadeHero. The book also features a foreword from Posy Simmonds (creator of Tamara Drewe).

The exhibition runs at the londonprintstudio from 17th- 25th June. See you down there for nibbles and drinks!

Shadow Workshop: The Owl and The Pussy Cat

I ran a workshop with 16 - 20 year olds on Shadow puppets. Successfully showing the students another form of visual storytelling that can be used in comic art.

We took Edward Lear's short story "The Owl and The Pussy Cat" and narrated it using sequential images.

Shadow puppets originated from China during the Han Dynasty. When one of the concubines of Emperor Wu of han died from an illness, the Emperor was devasted and summoned his court officers to bring his beloved back to life. The offices made a shape of a concubine using donkey leather. Her joints were animated using 11 separate pieces of leather, and adorned with painted clothes. Using an oli lamp they made her shadow move, bringing her back to life.

Wrapped up in a five pound note.
The Owl looked up to the stars above,
And sang to a small guitar,

Narrative Photography Workshop

In March, I ran a workshop on 'Narrative Photography'.

We spent the first hour storyboarding and finalising ideas, before going on to creating the paper props. Each student aimed to create a series of up to four photographs that linked together.

The final hour was spent in the londonprintstudio's photobooth.

There was an array of paper speech bubbles and masks. It definitely showed the students alternative methods they could use to create sequential images that convey a storyline.

Our Trip to Angoulême!

Last night londonprintstudio Comic Collective went to talk at Laydeez Do Comics about our trip to Angoulême at the end of January. Angoulême is Europe's largest festival for comic (or 'Bande Dessinée' as they are called in France). The whole city is taken over with comics; bakeries have comics laid out in the shop windows among the buns, there are comics painted on the buildings and there are lots and lots of talks, museums and tents full of all things comicky. It was like we'd died and gone to heaven! Here are the comic blogs each intern drew about their experiences...and some photos.

Workshop with Woodrow Phoenix

Last week, we had a workshop hosted by talented comic creator Woodrow Phoenix about constructing comics.

He talked us through the actual processes of brush and ink VS graphics tablet, as well as showing us how to create quick stories and characters (which was very funny). He also outlined the difficulty we have as comic artists of reaching audiences and people's (unfortunate) reluctance to reading them.

On the 19th January 2011 a talk was held by Ian Rakoff about western comics. Ian is a screen writer and comic collector. His talk was titled- The Western: Ethnicity and Gender in comics. He showed some interesting examples of western comics throughout the last century and up until the present day, showcasing their sometimes prejudiced and politically motivated stories.

Ben's Workshop

On the 18th of January, scriptwriter Ben Davies came to the londonprintstudio. He has taught on the MA Scriptwriting course at Leeds Metropolitan University and has worked for various companies, such as Disney and Sesame Street.

Ben talked us through various films whilst we decided what we liked and disliked about the stories and characters.

He showed us great examples of dialogue, such as the first scene in Todd Solondz's film "Happiness" when a couple have an awkward break-up at a restaurant. You can watch it here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=JNPXxPcvdFc

During the next few months londonprintstudio is providing 16-20 year old comic artists and writers with a fantastic chance to see their work in print. We are publishing a groundbreaking anthology that will include the work of the best of young British comic talent. British Council Delegation

Yesterday we met a British council delegation who came by the London Print Studio as part of their UK tour. They were looking into what the UK has to offer to comics, and came to see the 'Thats Novel' exhibition. We were lucky enough to be able to show them our work and tell them about our project. We met representatives from Belgium, Algiers and Finland plus Paul Gravett who was showing them around the exhibition.

Screen Print Workshop

This week, we had the chance to use the londonprintstudio facilities, and take part in one of their screen printing workshops.

One of the print technicians, Paul, led us through the hand's on induction step-by-step: demonstrating clearly how to coat our own screens and create different marks in our work, such as with a lino pen or a brush and ink.

Even though a few of us already had knowledge of screen printing, we did pick up new skills that we are now keen to use and develop within our comics.

Lynn's Workshop

On Tuesday December 7th we had a really good workshop ran by Lynn Weddle, an arts educator who has worked with a wide range of learners, from teenaged mothers to South American street children. Her workshop to us was very informative on how to actually run a workshop.

We took part in a series of games and activities and learnt how to complete detailed workshop plans. We also discussed our own definitions of what makes a good workshop and how this differs from the classroom environment of school. Lynn stressed the importance of running good workshops in schools, in order to make good impressions and to pave the way for future workshops with those schools and develop a good working relationship with them. She also briefed us on monitoring and evaluating workshops, again for the benefit of future workshops.

We discussed the diversity of kids that Lynn worked with, and some of the disciplinary difficulties encountered. Some kids wouldn't participate in the arts workshops because they didn't want to get messy, some even got kicked out of Tate Modern on a school trip because of behavioural problems. But ultimately these experience were rewarding for the kids - they eventually got to see their work displayed on Trafalgar Square's Fourth Plinth!

This was a really productive day for us interns and gave us plenty of food for thought on how to run our own comics workshops for the young comics enthusiasts at londonprintstudio.

Alien Ink

The comic creators of "Alien Ink" led a workshop at the London Print Studio last Saturday (4th December 2010).

We were joined by the talented David and Esther Bircham. They talked about how they first entered the comic industry, and what difficulties they had to face before they joined forces with Channel 4 Education to create "Alien Ink", an online graphic novel that reflects a series of teen pressures.

The Bircham's are definitely one's to watch. "Alien Ink" has potential to reach a worldwide audience through the internet; and their company, "Pulp Theatre", is the first comic book publisher to work with a major UK broadcaster on an online graphic novel project. They are definitely a very inspiring couple.

Alternative Press Fair

Last week I had a table at the Alternative Press Fair with fellow comic creator Tom J Hughes. Here is a pic of our spread! It was a good day, good and busy, and I bought some great zines and comics. There was a good mix of hand made crafty stuff, comics, anarchist and political zines and art school stuff. Highlights were the girls who had a tie die stall (they would tie die everything from long johns to baby gros right before your eyes) plus I got my first peek at the new Comics Reader. Its a broadsheet sized full colour newspaper solely dedicated to comics and on sale for the every reasonable price of £1. If you didn't make it down, definitely come to the next one!

Laydeez do Comics

Laydeez do Comics is a forum for comics creators, illustrators and filmmakers to listen to talks, present their work and meet and network with other creators. The emphasis is particularly on ‘life narrative, the drama of the domestic and the everyday’, with a preference on more ‘new wave’ and experimental work as opposed to more mainstream superhero comics.

Despite the title Laydeez do Comics is not just for women with men both attending and presenting their work as well.

The event held on Monday 29^th November 2010 at The Rag Factory included 5 speakers:

Lucy Bergonzi

An artist and illustrator who presented a selection of life and observational drawings she had produced. What was interesting about this presentation was that she used it as an opportunity to gain feedback and suggestions on where she should take her work in the future.

Hannah Berry

A comics artist whose graphic novel Britten and Brulightly is being published by Jonathan Cape. Hannah presented some of the process of creating her graphic novel showing how characters developed from her time at university.

Lisa Gornick

A filmmaker who presented the drawings she creates during the film making process. A lot of her work stemmed from her emotional at certain times which then developed into more fully formed ideas.

Paul Gravett

Paul told the group about his time publishing Escape which was a comics magazine presenting both well known and less well known creators. It was interesting to see the creators that were introduced in Escape who went on to become big names in the comics industry.

Neil Phillips

Neil Philips is a Psychiatrist and publisher Shrink Rap Press. He talked how he uses cartoons to communicate his ideas about mental illness through his Shrink-Rap Press

Joe Kelly is a comic creator with a passion for stories based on real life. He studied Visual Communications at Leeds College of Art and Design where he first sold his comics at Travelling Man. Since graduating in 2009 he has worked as a freelance illustrator and cartoonist creating flyers and posters for clubs and bands, storyboards, and t-shirt designs. His style is influenced by 70’s and 80’s comics and he is currently working on a graphic novel based in a cake factory in the North.

Isabel Greenberg recently graduated from the University of Brighton Illustration course. In 2008 she came second in the Jonathan Cape/Observer graphic short story prize. Since graduating she has appeared in Nobrow's anthology 'A Graphic Cosmogeny' and in Nobrow 4 'Like Night and Day'. Currently she is working on a series of short comics.

William Goldsmith is an illustrator and comic creator living and working in Brighton. He recently graduated from Glasgow School Of Art and has since exhibited at DA&AD New Blood, Museum of London and the Goethe Institute. His short story 'Like A Wagon' was Highly Commended in the Observer Graphic Story prize in 2009. His debut graphic novel 'Vignettes of Ystov' is published by Jonathan Cape and Random House in March 2011.
